Rep. Quincy Murphy announces re-election bid

AUGUSTA – State Rep. Quincy Murphy (D-Augusta) announced Monday he will be a candidate for re-election to the House District 120 post in the 2006 Democratic Primary.

 “It has been a great honor representing the people of Richmond County in the state House of Representatives,” said Murphy, who has served in the House of Representatives since 2001. “I want to continue to make sure the concerns of our community are heard at the State Capitol.”

Rep. Murphy is a member of the House Higher Education, Insurance and Intra-Governmental Cooperation committees. During the current legislative term, Murphy has sponsored or co-sponsored three legislative measures that have become law and three more that have passed the House and Senate and are awaiting the governor’s signature.

He was also chief sponsor of legislation naming the interchange at Deans Bridge Road and Bobby Jones Expressway in Augusta/Richmond County as the Henry Howard Memorial Interchange, honoring his late House colleague who served in the legislature for 15 years.

“There is much work still to be done,” she said. “I pledge to continue working to support our public schools, expand access to quality affordable health care for all Georgians and help create more employment opportunities in the Augusta area.”

Rep. Murphy was born in Atlanta and raised in Edgefield County, S.C. He graduated from North Carolina A&T State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics.

Murphy’s history of community and civic service includes presently serving as a board member of Augusta/Richmond County Communities and Schools and as a member of the Augusta and National Associations of Life Underwriters, the Georgia Association of Black Elected Officials, the National Conference of State Legislatures, Alpha Mu Boule' - Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. and state treasurer of the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus.

He is President and Chief Executive Officer of Quincy Murphy & Associates, an affiliate of the Allstate Insurance Company, in Augusta.  He is a former Executive Secretary and Training Officer of the Augusta Association of Basketball Officials, former member of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Basketball and Football Officials Association and Optimist Club of South Richmond County. He is a former board member of the Augusta/Richmond County Coliseum Authority, Care Management Consultants, CSRA Business League Inc., CSRA Economic Opportunity Authority Inc. and the United Way of the Central Savannah River Area.

During his lifetime of community involvement, Rep. Murphy has been honored with three years of recognition as an Allstate Financial Leader and Quality Agent and 18 years as recipient of the Honors Ring.

He was named Man of the Year by Mount Canaan Baptist Church in Edgefield County. Rep. Murphy is a member of Augusta's historic Tabernacle Baptist Church, where he is a Deacon, Trustee and Church Treasurer.

He is married to the former Linda Dianne Dunton, and they have two adult children, Jennifer and William Quincy III.

“I look forward to meeting and talking with the voters of the 120th District during the course of the 2006 campaign,” Murphy said. “This is a very important election year in Georgia, and I pledge to listen to the views of my constituents on the issues and respond accordingly.”
